Many of use have heard the expressions - “man breasts”, “man boobs”, “moobs” etc. etc. etc. For some male breasts are often a source of ridicule; something to joke about. However, for the increasing number of men that suffer from man boobs, it is no laughing matter.
SO, WHAT CAUSES THE DEVELOPMENT OF MAN BOOBS?

NATURALLY OCCURRING HORMONAL IMBALANCES
In childhood many of us experience a hormonal imbalance - our livers are unable to process all of the newly created testosterone that courses through our veins and so some of it gets converted to estrogen instead. Estrogen, the female sex hormone, promotes the growth of breast tissue. For most guys this resolves as we progress through adolescence and the emerging man breasts disappear.
In older men, a lack of free testosterone in the bloodstream, which would naturally counteract the estrogen present in our bodies, can also result in the development of man boobs.
DIETARY INTAKE
Weight loss is of course key to getting rid of man breasts, and so naturally a high calorie diet will have a significant effect on your chances of developing man breasts.
Fat content is not the only issue with diet though. A large amount of the produce we buy today can contain naturally occurring estrogens and phytoestrogens (compounds that mimic estrogen). The presence of these “female” hormones can affect male development, as referred to above. Many foods, such as soy, carrots, certain nuts and red wine are said to contain estrogens or phytoesetrogens.
In addition to the naturally occurring estrogen carrying foods, there’s also the issue of foods treated with estrogen and other hormones - non-organic red meats and farmed products, which are often pumped full of hormones to increase milk production or yield.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Once again, we come back to hormone imbalances. Studies have indicated that testosterone blocking pollutants are making their way into our rivers and waterways. Pharmaceutical treatments, pesticides and medicines are polluting water supplies, and evidence of this has strengthened the link between pollution and rising male fertility issues and the development of man breasts.

What follows are a few tips to help you start fighting off the man breasts.
First - lose that excess body fat; don’t scrimp on the cardio work.
Exercise your chest, but the right way. Flat presses, flyes and push ups will likely make things worse rather than better. There are specific exercises, such as the incline press, that you should be working on to develop the muscles primarily in the upper part of your chest.
Avoid estrogenic foods such as soy, eggs and non organic red meats, and increase your intake of anti-estrogenic foods like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and avocado.
